It is now time to prune your shrubs for the winter colour. Shrubs like Cornus and Mahonia need to be pruned 0nce they have got more than 30 stems, if you prune about 25% of stems on the shrub down to ground level, this will open up the shrub and stop the stems rubbing against each other, which can lead to infection getting into your plant. This will then give you great foliage colour during the winter. A great way to increase your plant stock is to collect the seeds, once the seed is plump and darker in colour, give them a squeeze and if they feel full, pick them and store them in a labelled envelope to keep them dry, and they will be ready to plant in the spring, or you could give them away to family and friends to introduce them to the wonderful world of Horticulture!
