Summer is finally on its way!! This is the time of year to really get the best out of your garden; there are so many beautiful and colourful spring bedding plants to choose from, as well as some lovely plants that will still look great after the summer months have passed by such as fuchsias and penstemons. Plant out spring bedding after the risk of a late frost diminishes, but before the real summer heat kicks in. Choose plants that are green and bushy with plenty of buds, and give them all a good soaking before you plant them. Is a good time to cut and shape your evergreen hedges, but do be sure to check that there are no birds nesting before you do so. This is now the time to keep up a regular mowing routine as the lawn is actively growing and to look its best, will also require feeding, moss killing and weeding. During the summer months it is a good idea to mow your lawn at least once a fortnight, as long as it is dry, and keep it in shape using an edging tool, and trim the edges after mowing. Plants will need to be watered regularly during warmer weather, and it is a good idea to do this on an evening when the sun is no longer shining on the plants, as this will reduce the risk of burning the leaves. Recycle water where you can by collecting rain water or use an irrigation system. Have a great summer and enjoy your gardens!
It’s now time to brush away the cobwebs and start thinking about spring. Bulbs planted in the winter will start to appear as temperatures increase, so it’s a good idea to prune winter flowering shrubs and cut back deciduous grasses, so that you can appreciate the spring colour coming through. It’s also a good time to prune shrubs such as wisteria and Cornus. Think about planting schemes for the spring and sow seeds indoors to give them a head start. Tidy boarders, weed and mulch with compost, Weeds will start to grow again as the weather warms up nearer to spring, so deal with them early, before they go to seed and get out of hand. As you weed, tidy boarders and mulch with compost. Aerate your lawns using a garden fork, or for larger areas, you could hire an aerator, then re seed any patchy areas, and give a spring lawn feed to keep your grass lush and green.

As the warmer months of summer draw to a close, it’s now time to prepare the garden for the colder months ahead. It’s a good idea to prepare your soil in November ready for next year’s planting, before the winter really sets in. Clear away any weeds and old crops, and add an organic fertilizer as you dig, and then cover the area with compost, leaf mould, or even plastic sheeting, and the soil will be ready to plant into in the spring. For some colour through the duller months, plant winter bedding such as pansies, violas and wallflowers and raise containers off the ground on to pot feet or bricks, to prevent them from becoming water logged, and use bubble wrap around the container to insulate from the frost. Now is also a good time to plant bulbs for the spring, such as Daffodils and crocus. The colder months are the perfect time to prune apples and pears, maples and birches to prevent the sap bleeding into the stems. Remember to look after wildlife, feed the birds throughout the winter and stack logs to provide shelter for insects. Have an eco friendly Christmas, and recycle your real Christmas trees by shredding them for mulch to use around acid loving plants such as azaleas or rhododendrons , or you could take them to Bristol zoo gardens, where they will be mulched on mass and recycled, or even better, if you opt for a British grown living tree, you could plant it in the garden ready to use again next year!
It’s great to see that Autumn can be as beautiful as Spring!
Getting ready for a big planting job, and glad to see that the sun is shining again!!

No not really! This is James with his daughter Hannah. As you can see, she is taking a keen interest in the family business already.
